2020.10.02 14:25 yodatsracist Let’s get a list together of all the Colleges and Universities with Early Action Deadlines *before* November 1st and Regular Decision or Priority Scholarship Deadlines *before* January 1st. I’ll start…

Please help me add to this. I got some of this information (especially the scholarships) from an old list so I don't know if it's still up to date. Please help me correct any errors. Please also add any schools I missed. I bet there are other annoying big state schools with December 1st Deadlines. I bet I've missed some priority scholarship deadlines. I bet I got most of the notable private schools, but if everyone can just check their local state colleges, that would be ideal.

I'm not worried schools with special deadlines after November 1st (for early) or January 1st because I feel as if most readers of this sub will have at least one application submitted by those dates (if applying Early). This is just a list to make sure you don't miss any deadlines.

EARLY

October 15th:

Oxford University (UK)
Cambridge University (UK) [note: you can only apply to either Oxford or Cambridge, using the British UCAS system, not the Common App; these aren't actually "Early"—this is their only deadline—but it made sense to put them here somehow, whatever, it’s before November 1st]
Coast Guard Academy
Georgia Tech (Georgia Residents only; non-Georgia Residents Nov. 2)
Stanford (if using the arts supplement only)
Texas A & M (Early Action; only an option for engineering applicants)
University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill (UNC) (Early Action)
University of South Carolina (Early Action)
University of Georgia (UGA) (both Georgia and non-Georgia)

October 31st

Berea College (Early Action)
Transylvania University (Early Action)
Please note that any school with an early date before November 1st is officially uppity, except for Oxford and Cambridge 'cause they're really just riding their own wave out there. But what the hell is up with these other schools? Who do they think they are?

REGULAR

November 1st

University of Florida (only some parts of the application; rolling after this, "on space-available basis")

November 15th:

University of Washington—Seattle (UDub)
What the hell. Seattle's cool, I mean, but it's not that cool. It's not California. I literally don't understand why they're so much earlier than everyone else. This school has lots of advantages students look for: it's in a major city, it's a public school so less expensive, it has a number of great programs including one of the top Computer Science programs in the country (think: where are Microsoft and Amazon headquartered?), etc., but a lot of students miss out every year on a great school because of their weird deadline.

November 30th:

All University of California campuses, including:

December 1st:

All Rutgers campuses,
New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden
Gonzaga (but "will take late applications until February 1st")
Stanford but only if you're doing an arts supplement.
Texas A&M (TAMU)—College Station
University of Southern California for film school applicants only
All University of Texas campuses (priority deadline), including UT Austin, UT Dallas, etc.
Again, I bet at least one or two other big state schools are in this category. Help me out.

December 4th:

California Polytechnic (Cal Poly)
All California State Campuses (CSU) (I’m not listing all 23 campuses)

December 15th

*University of San Diego (but accepts applications through February 1st for "Late Consideration")

SCHOLARSHIPS

Many schools offer consideration for scholarships for those who apply by a certain deadline. These can be either Priority Deadlines (you have a better chance of scholarships if you apply before) or Hard Deadlines (do or die deadlines where if you miss it, they won't consider you for merit). Priority Deadlines marked with a +, Hard Deadlines marked with a $.
These I actually just found on one long list from a few years ago so I haven't double checked to make sure the dates are still correct. I also I haven't filled in Priority or Hard but I'll try to go through and fill those in like next week or something. If someone wants to do that now, though, that'd be rad as hell tho.

October 15st:

University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill (Morehead-Cain Scholarship, in state; OOS October 1st)
University of Central Florida (I'd check other Florida schools as well)

November 1st:

Indiana University (IU)
Michigan State
North Carolina State University (NCSU) (Parks Scholarship; school endorsement should actually be done by October 15th)
Ohio State University—Columbus
Purdue
Texas Christian University (TCU)
University of Maryland—College Park
University of Georgia (UGA) (Foundation Fellowship—internationals and OOS can get this)
University of Texas—Austin (UT—Austin) (even earlier than the normal deadline)

November 15th :

Emory $
Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) (special COVID scholarship deadline)
Loyola University Maryland
The Ohio State University (OSU) (Maximus, Provost, and Trustees scholarships)
University of South Carolina
UNC and Duke's Robertson Scholarship

December 1st:

Boston University
Claremont McKenna
Clemson
College of Charleston
Creighton
Grinnell
Hampton
John Carroll University
Loyola University Chicago
Saint Louis University
Transylvania University
University of Connecticut—Storrs
University of Illinois—Chicago (UIC) +
University of Southern California (USC) $
University of Richmond
University of Rochester (including the IB scholarship)
Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech (Presidential Scholarship)
Washington & Lee

December 15th:

University of Alabama

December 20th

Duke (priority deadline for interviews)
&
Again, please help me add any schools I've missed!
Team work makes the dream work.

2020.09.09 00:25 rayef3rw A Brief Look at How Covid-19 Impacts Current Annual Consecutive Game Streaks

I think the fact that this season will be a college football season like no other goes without saying. This year is a patchwork quilt of teams that are or aren't playing this fall (or something in-between), with many more games likely to be postponed or canceled due to ongoing Covid-19-related fallout.
Perhaps the only close comparison is the 1918 season, where the closing months of WWI sidelined many of the teams that had traditionally played college football, and the Spanish Flu sidelined the rest for varying periods of time.
Looking back through the history of college football, the World Wars (US involvement during 1917-1918 and 1941-1945) have been the two primary disruptors of the traditional yearly meetings between college football teams. I'll do a little more analysis later on in the post, but the vast majority of the existing consecutive game streaks in college football date to post-WWII, with only 27 currently-surviving consecutive match-ups dating to before 1941.
With that introduction, let's take a look at the longest-surviving uninterrupted match-ups in college football and which ones will be impacted this fall. As a quick aside, this of course all depends on how these records get counted going forward and whether a Spring 2020 season (if/when it happens) will be fully counted as the "2020" season, so I'll just add the caveat that these are uninterrupted fall meetings for now -- and assume that applies throughout.
Let me also preface this list by saying that while I tried to include all of the smaller FCS/DII conferences, I would be shocked if I didn't miss a few. If you notice any uninterrupted rivalry games missing from this list, please! -- let me know!

So, what does this all mean? I won't do a full re-hash of the chart, but I'll do some highlights and summaries of the important sections below.
As a side note, I kind of arbitrarily chose to end in 1972, but it has some justification that I'll get to later on. Really, though, it was mostly just because I felt like that was a decent stopping point.

Most Common Causes of Breaks Before Covid

So, what was the primary reason that most these consecutive game streaks last came to an end? And will it be beaten out by Covid, assuming Spring 2020 doesn't count/doesn't happen? I didn't do a fully exhaustive search (partly because some stuff was hard to find and partly because I got tired of looking, if we're being honest), but World War II ended the bulk of the streaks on this list, adding up to about 40 of the matches. The other factors aren't particularly close to matching that total, though World War I is probably the next closest, aside from generic scheduling conflicts/choosing not to schedule each other, with about 5 stoppages.
Other common factors included:
Other less common reasons for breaks that I found amusing included:

Implications

Discontinued Games

The teams and conferences that suffer the most from this are exactly who you'd expect it to be. The Ivy League, Big Ten, and Pac-12 are losing the most uninterrupted games, though the Patriot League, the SWAC, and the MAC are also losing some notable matches
By far the most notable game that will not be played this fall will be the LafayetteLafayette LehighLehigh match-up; it will be the first time in 123 years that the game won't be played in the fall. It was last forgone in 1896 due to a dispute over player eligibility; had it not been for that break in relations, The Rivalry would have dated back wholly uninterrupted to the two teams' first meeting in 1884, which would have been good for 136 consecutive years of playing.
The next oldest game not to be played this fall is the MinnesotaMinnesota WisconsinWisconsin game, followed by the ClemsonClemson South CarolinaSouth Carolina game, which has been played continuously since 1909, meaning the 2020 season will be the end of 3 of the longest-running continuous series in all of college football.
Finally, one game I hate to see go is the MorehouseMorehouse TuskegeeTuskegee match, which had previously been played continuously since 1936. I couldn't find a lot about the history of this series online very easily, but it's the longest-running HBCU match I could find. Several other historic HBCU rivalries ended temporarily fairly recently owing to the disbanding of Prairie View A&MPrairie View A&M for the 1990 football season.

Previously Unbroken Series

Unfortunately, Covid is putting an end to a few series which have previously met every year without interruption. Those matches include:

Non-Conference Games That Were Maintained

You've got to give a lot of credit to any ADs who managed to keep non-conference rivalry games going through all this. The only consecutive non-conference rivalry games that will survive undamaged are those belonging to three major service academies. Unfortunately, the Merchant MarinesMerchant Marine and the Coast GuardCoast Guard were not so fortunate, and have canceled their fall season.
The ArmyArmy, NavyNavy, and Air ForceAir Force managed to keep afloat their rivalries which have been played continuously since 1971/72 for the Air Force and since 1930 for the Army and Navy. This was possible only by the work of the Air Force, who, as of right now, will be playing only Army and Navy this fall, though the Mountain West Conference did recently announce a revised schedule which allows for 2 non-conference games, so this could change. Both ArmyArmy and NavyNavy are currently playing full schedules.
This was really the main reason I stopped making my list in 1972. That, and it lets me talk about the Textile Bowl (NC State vs Clemson). I'll discuss that in the following section.

Games Unlikely to Be Rescheduled

Though most of these games are intra-conference games that can be rescheduled in the Spring fairly easily, there are a few notable games that will almost certainly not be. Many of these games include teams who will both be playing this season, but will be playing in different conferences or unable to meet for other reasons. These games include:

Non-Conference Games Which Can (Probably) Be Rescheduled

While Conference games are possible to be scheduled fairly easily, there are a few non-conference games which will probably be resumed this Spring.

Closing

To answer that question I posed earlier (will Covid potentially impact more currently-consecutive football meetings than World War II), the answer is yes. While this is a bit disingenuous to say, since many otherwise-consecutive rivalry games impacted by World War II have stopped playing since the war for other reasons (looking at you, 2010-14 Conference Realignment), Covid will impact 66 otherwise-uninterrupted matches, while 32 will continue on. Of those 66 canceled matches, though, only the 9 listed above (under the are Unlikely to Be Rescheduled section) are, in my view, highly unlikely to be revived in the Spring, while the rest can continue on in the Spring if scheduling and Corona allow.
1 - I would like to find a more concise and formal source, but so far one has evaded me
2 - Several Minnesota-based athletic pages say that the cause was Teddy Roosevelt banning rivalry games in 1906; despite that, the only period explanation I've found for the break in the games was a June 1906 article about a ChicagoChicago MinnesotaMinnesota game scheduled for 1907, which said the 1906 match-up was prevented because "The big nine conference [Big 10 today], in forbidding games which established a western championship, did so on the ground that it brought about an unhealthy rivalry and stirred up improper spirit between the big educational institutions." Though the Big 9 could have chosen to do that because of threats by Roosevelt, the immediate cause was the conference's decision.
3 - Some sources disagree on this: At the time of their first athletic break, then-AD at BGSU said "Frankly, Toledo is too tough for us in football. We feel that we can no longer compete on even terms." However, there have also been references to players having "more trouble avoiding flying fists than avoiding blockers and tacklers" before the series was temporarily canceled as well. For a good write-up of the series, see here

2020.08.27 09:39 HauntedSpy SKs you never might've heard of: The USA

Greetings. For a long while now, I've been compiling and continue to compile a long list of SKs (convicted and suspected) across the world, which have yet to receive an article on Wikipedia. I haven't run a countdown, but I do believe it might count in the triple digits by now. Anyway, today I decided to share one individual SK for each US state and territory, with a little information and a linked article/source to their crimes. I hope you find this information as fascinating as I do. Let us begin. ALABAMA: Curtis Grantham (1988; 3 victims) Murdered two women in Phenix City, burying them in a wooded area in Seale. Later confessed to the October murder of 32-year-old Dawn Ball, previously thought to be a victim of Christopher Wilder. Sentenced to life imprisonment. ALASKA: Gary Zieger (1971-1973; 6+ victims) Doubling as a member of a motorcycle gang who was paid to kill people, Zieger is also thought to be responsible for murdering at least three female hitchhikers around Anchorage. The true extents of his crimes remains unclear, and he himself was murdered along the Seward Highway in 1973. AMERICAN SAMOA: None to my knowledge ARIZONA: Michael Carlson (2003-2009; 3-9 victims) Shot dead his sister in Tucson in 2003, and later murdered a couple in Marana. Confessed to 9 murders in total, but his other victims, if there are any, haven't been found. Sentenced to death. ARKANSAS: Randy Gay (1978-2011; 3 victims) Murdered his father-in-law in 1978, served time and released. Murdered his father in 1991, released again. And finally, murdered a woman and dumped her body at Ouachita National Forest in 2011. Sentenced to death. CALIFORNIA: Pittsburg serial killer (1998-1999; 4 victims) Within a two-month period, four young women were killed in this little, tightly-knit community. It is believed that it's a work of a serial offender, and the Pittsburg police are searching for clues to catch him. Unidentified. COLORADO: Ronald Lee White (1987-1988; 3-16 victims) Murdered roommate and two other men in disputes/robberies, mostly surrounding Pueblo. Later confessed that he has killed 16 victims in total. Authorities believe that at least four cold cases around the state could be tied to him. Sentenced to life imprisonment. CONNECTICUT: Zackery Cody Franklin (2007-2011; 4 victims) Murdered four men around New Haven for mostly robbery purposes. Originally convicted for two homicides, later connected to the other two. Sentenced to life imprisonment. D.C.: Greg Brice (1994-1996; 4 victims) Shot two men in two separate instances for personal disputes. Escaped confinement in December 1995, and a few months later, murdered two men. Recaptured, and sentenced to long imprisonment terms. DELAWARE: James Gordy (unknown-1897; 1-4 victims) Battered his wife to death with an oar in 1897; suspected in the suspicious deaths of his father, ex-wife and their child. Executed in Georgetown in 1897. FLORIDA: Leon Holston (1964-1966; 4 victims) Murdered four young boys in Pompano Beach, while he himself was still a teenager. Sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment. GEORGIA: John Robinson (unknown-1901; 1-6 victims) Known as "The Colored Ripper", he was executed for the strangulation murder of a young black woman in Laurens County, whose body he viciously mutilated after. Five other similar murders were suspected to be his doing, but never proven. Executed in Dublin in 1902. GUAM: None to my knowledge HAWAII: Robert Mark Edwards (1986-1994; 2+ victims) Convicted of raping, robbing and murdering two female realtors, one in Los Alamitos, CA, and the other in Kihei, HI. The gap between his crimes, and their severity, leads me to believe he might have other victims, likely in California. Sentenced to death in California and life imprisonment in Hawaii. IDAHO: Gerald Pizzuto (1985; 4 victims) Murdered a woman and a man in Seattle, WA during robberies. Later moved to Boise, ID, where he murdered a couple in a remote cabin. Sentenced to death in Idaho. ILLINOIS: Michael A. Johnson, Jr. (2008-2010; 4 victims) Rapist who abused and murderd young women in Chicago. It's peculiar to note that he strangled them with a deformed right hand, which was missing three fingers. Sentenced to life imprisonment. INDIANA: Anna Cunningham (1918-1922; 5 victims) Poisoned her family members with arsenic in Gary. Sentenced to life imprisonment for one murder, but later paroled for unspecified reasons. Died a free woman in 1945. IOWA: Donald Piper (1993-1998; 2-4 victims) Hotel maintenance chief who stabbed and strangled two women in Des Moines, and is suspected of another two similar killings during that time period. Sentenced to life imprisonment. KANSAS: Mary Troy (1909; 3+ victims) Murdered at least three children in Topeka, all of whom were entrusted in her care. Possibly responsible for half a dozen similar deaths. Fate unknown. KENTUCKY: Michael Abner (1983-2010; 3 victims) Following his arrest for the stabbing death of an elderly man in Pulaski County, he confessed to two cold cases involving strangulation of old women, in 1983 and 1988. Sentenced to life imprisonment. LOUISIANA: Edward Augustine (2007-2011; 3 victims) Involved in a fatal car crash while driving a stolen vehicle in New Orleans, charges dismissed. Later, he and another man killed two men in Jefferson Parish. Rearrested and serving a 40-year prison term. MAINE: Constance Fisher (1954-1966; 6 victims) Mentally-ill woman who drowned six children, three each on two separate occassions, in Waterville. Confined to a mental hospital, but managed to escape and later drowned herself in the Kennebec River in 1973. MARYLAND: Patrick McCullough (1980-2001; 3 victims) Deaf man who murdered two employers (1980 and 1982) in Annapolis, and later his girlfriend in Waldorf (2001). After killing her, he shot himself through the head. MASSACHUSETTS: John Monteiro (2007-2010; 3 victims) Rhode Island man who murdered a man in Brockton in July 2007, and later shot a brother and sister to death. Sentenced to life imprisonment. MICHIGAN: Paul Harrington (1975-1999; 5 victims) Former Detroit police officer who shot his ex-wife and two children in 1975; sent to mental institution and released after two years. After living a relatively peaceful life for many years, he was fired from his job and stopped taking his medication, leading to him killing his new wife and son in 1999. Sentenced to life imprisonment. MINNESOTA: David Torgerson (1969-1973; 6+ victims) Murdered two Minneapolis women in 1969 on separate occassions, and later on, his wife, two children and the babysitter in Rochester. Suspected of more murders since the 1950s. Hanged himself before trial for killing his family. MISSISSIPPI: Columbus elderly murderer (1996-1998; 4-5 victims) In two years, five elderly people were murdered in Columbus. Three years ago, DNA evidence snatched a man named David Solomon Murray, from Pine Bluff, AR, as the killer of one of the victims, but we're yet to see if he's responsible for the others. Unresolved case. MISSOURI: John Wesley Robinson (1896-1913; 3 victims) Strangled a woman in St. Louis and later buried her corpse under the floorboards. Arrested, served 11 years and released. In 1913, he murdered his wife (April 11th) and his stepdaughter (May 17th), dismembering each body and burning the remains in the stove or burying them. Executed in Kansas City in 1915. MONTANA: Ah Yung (unknown-1883; 1-17) Chinese immigrant who murdered a paymaster in Missoula. Authorities suspected he killed a total of seventeen people (two white men and fifteen Chinese), but not much information is available about them. Executed in Missoula in 1883. NEBRASKA: Clarence Victor (1964-1988; 3 victims) Mentally-disabled man who murdered an elderly woman in her Omaha home. Had previous convictions for manslaughter and murder, in 1964 and 1976, respectively. Died in prison. Two months later, in the span of eight hours, he raped and strangled two women with a telephone cord. Sentenced to life imprisonment. NEW HAMPSHIRE: Craig Conkey (1991-1994; 3 victims) Killed two women in Lexington, MA, in 1992 and 1994. In 2012, admitted to fatally stabbing a New Hampshire university employee in 1991. Sentenced to life imprisonment. NEW JERSEY: Shiquan Bellamy (2010; 5 victims) Between February and April, murdered three men and a couple in Jersey City during robberies and an attempted carjacking. Sentenced to life imprisonment. NEW MEXICO: Clifton Bloomfield (2005-2008; 5 victims) Murdered five people around the state, including a couple. In 2018, he was aided in a prison escape by a guard, but was recaptured. Sentenced to life imprisonment. NEW YORK: Dmitriy Yakovlev (2003-2007; 3 victims) Russian immigrant who, together with his wife, killed three other Russian emigrants in Brooklyn so he could steal their possessions and bank cards, which he later sold off. Sentenced to life imprisonment. NORTH CAROLINA: Herman Allen (1930-1942; 4 victims) First murdered a boarder in his Johnston County home because he believed he was having an affair with his wife. Convicted of manslaughter and released 11 years later, still believing that people were oogling after his wife, he shot to death his wife, brother-in-law and a man he believed to have been courting her. Executed in 1942. NORTH DAKOTA: Floyd Tapson (1987-1996; 0-3+ victims) Suspected, but not convicted, in killing disabled women at group homes, two in MN (Moorhead and Wadena) and one in Grand Forks. Possibly responsible for similar murders in Baltimore, MD. Sentenced to 75 years for kidnapping in Montana. NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS: None to my knowledge OHIO: Oliver Crook Haugh (1890s-1905; 3-5+ victims) Doctor who murdered his parents and brother in Dayton, and was tied to at least two further murders of concubines in Lorraine and Chicago, IL. Many patients of his, spanning across multiple states dating back to 1890s, died in mysterious circumstances as well. He was also a childhood bully to none other than Wilbur Wright, of the Wright Brothers fame. Executed in 1907. OKLAHOMA: Wayne Garrison (1972-1989; 3 victims) Vicious killer of two toddlers (1972 and 1974) and a 13-year-old Tulsa boy in 1989, whose dismembered remains were found in a lake. His 1970s killings were done while he was still a child. Sentenced to death. OREGON: William Perry Jackson (1980s; 5+ victims) Murdered and robbed people around Portland, sometimes with accomplices. Escaped prison with a convicted bank robber, but later recaptured. Suspect in as many as 30 murders in Oregon and Washington State. Sentenced to life imprisonment. PENNSYLVANIA: Jermaine Burgess (2008: 2+ victims) Career criminal who robbed and murdered two elderly women in Ridley Township and Upper Darby (October 27th and November 10th, respectively). Authorities believe he has committed other murders as well. Sentenced to life imprisonment. PUERTO RICO: Ángel Colón Maldonado (1985-1987; 27 victims) Known as "The Angel of the Bachelors", he lured men for sexual favors, and after he was given various luxurious items, he killed his lovers. Fled to the continental states, but was quickly recaptured. Sentenced to life imprisonment. RHODE ISLAND: Jeffrey Mailhot (2003-2004; 3 victims) Known as "The Rhode Island Ripper", he strangled and then dismembered three prostitutes in his hometown of Woonsocket. Sentenced to life imprisonment. SOUTH CAROLINA: Joseph Ernest Atkins (1969-1986; 3 victims) Shot his brother in North Charleston in 1969. Sentenced to life imprisonment, but his father pleaded for his release, and he was paroled in 1980. Six years later, as an act of gratitude, he shot his father and a 13-year-old neighbor on October 27, 1986. Executed in 1999. SOUTH DAKOTA: Rapid City Creek Drownings (1998-2000; 0-11+ victims) Suspicious deaths of homeless men in Rapid City, six of whom were Native Americans. They stopped just as mysteriously as they began, and authorities believe that they were possibly murdered by a serial offender who might've moved away, presumably to Denver, CO. Unsolved. TENNESSEE: Michael Mullins (1999-2012; 3+ victims) Career criminal and serial rapist who beat and strangled elderly women in Memphis. Strong possibility of additional murders and assaults committed by him. Sentenced to life imprisonment. TEXAS: Tommy Lee Stewart (1971-1986; 3 victims) Abducted and killed a woman in Waco in 1971. Released from prison in 1986 and moved to Port Arthur, where he later murdered a mother and child. Sentenced to life imprisonment. U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Croix Voodoo Poisonings (1984-1988; 5 victims) Five people were poisoned in St. Croix with cyanide, in what appears to be ritualistic slayings. Police suspect a conman, posing as an 'obeah man' (a type of shaman), to be behind the murders. Unsolved. UTAH: Thomas Noffsinger (1989-1990; 3 victims) Strangled and raped two women two months apart in Millcreek and Sandy, and later stabbed a Salt Lake City chef to death in 1990. Sentenced to life imprisonment. VERMONT: Gary Lee Schaefer (1979-1983; 3+ victims) Springfield automechanic who raped and strangled three girls in his hometown. At one time suspected to be responsible for other murders, but this hasn't been proven so far. Sentenced to life imprisonment. VIRGINIA: Walter Cotton and Brandt O'Grady (1898-1900; in the dozens, couldn't determine exact number) An unlikely pair considering the time period (black man and Irish immigrant) who robbed and murdered people around the state, mostly around Emporia. Both were lynched at Greensville by an angry mob in 1900. WASHINGTON: Donna Perry (1990; 3 victims) Known as "The .22 Caliber Killer", who killed three prostitutes in Seattle between February and March 1990. Interestingly, Perry is one of the few known transsexual SKs on record, committing the murders when she still identified as a man. Sentenced to life imprisonment. WEST VIRGINIA: Joseph Eisele (1867; 3 victims) German/Swiss immigrant known as 'The Parkersburg Murderer' who murdered three fellow immigrants for robbery purposes across the state between June and December. Interestingly, another self-confessed SK, Thomas D. Carr, admitted to being his accomplice in one murder, but this was unsubstantiated. Executed in Parkersburg in 1868. WISCONSIN: Alvin Taylor (1985-1988; 4 victims) Nightclub singer who murdered three men in Dunn and Eau Claire Counties, as well as one in the state of Minnesota. Sentenced to psychiatric treatment. WYOMING: Rawlins Rodeo Murders (1974; 4 victims) Over the summer, four young girls disappeared from rodeos in the small town of Rawlins. Only one body was found nine years later in Sinclair, while the others remain missing and are presumed dead. Royal Russell Long, a convicted kidnapper additionally suspected of killing two Oklahoma girls in the 1980s, is the prime suspect, although some theorize Ted Bundy might've been involved. Unsolved.

2020.08.07 14:26 ILikeNeurons Common misconceptions about sexual consent, explained

It's important to understand sexual consent because sexual activity without consent is sexual assault. Before you flip out about how "everyone knows what consent is," that is absolutely not correct! Some (in fact, many) people are legit confused about what constitutes consent, such as this teenager who admitted he would ass-rape a girl because he learned from porn that girls like anal sex (overwhelmingly not true, in addition to being irrelevant), or this ostensibly well-meaning college kid who put his friend at STI risk after assuming she was just vying for a relationship when she said no, or this guy from the "ask a rapist thread" who couldn't understand why a sex-positive girl would not have sex with him, or this guy who seemed to think that because a woman was a submissive that meant he could dominate her, or this 'comedian' who haplessly made a public rape confession in the form of a comedy monologue, or this 'well-liked kid' who thought good girls always had to fight a little the first time. In fact, researchers have found that in acquaintance rape--one of the most common types of rape--perpetrators tend to see their behavior as seduction, not rape, or they somehow believe the rape justified.
Yet sexual assault is a tractable problem. Offenders often rationalize their behavior by whether society will let them get away with it, and the more the rest us confidently understand consent the better advocates we can be for what's right. And yes, a little knowledge can actually reduce the incidence of sexual violence.
So, without further ado, the following are common misconceptions about sexual consent:
If all of this seems obvious, ask yourself how many of these key points were missed in popular analyses of this viral news article.

2020.05.25 14:05 ILikeNeurons I’ve made a comprehensive and exhaustive list of the most common misconceptions about sexual consent. Use this as a resource to destroy incel’s arguments!

Contact tracing is also important. We need your help. What we’ve got to make sure if we want to open our economy, have our kids doing things, and get them back into school, but we know there is a virus out there that we don’t want our friends, our kids, even people we don’t know to get. What we have to do is contain outbreaks and that’s where contact tracing comes in. The main thing I need from each and every Kentuckian is to answer the phone. Nobody is tracking you on your cell phone, we aren’t doing any of that but we are calling you so you can make sure you don’t spread it to other people. It’s got support like food, and ensuring people have a safe place to be but if you don’t pick up the phone it doesn’t work. If we want to reopen, to pass this next, maybe even harder, chapter in this test of humanity, I need you to answer the call. We’re asking of you as a citizen of a patriotic American. And before anyone tries to make this political, this is the White House’s suggestions. We must have the ability to test and trace. Everyone is doing this across the nation, this is just good public health pushed by everybody. If we do it, we can continue to have the best responses to a health pandemic like this we’ve ever seen. We are trying to avoid that second spike like we saw in St. Louis (Philadelphia vs St. Louis referenced). I want to be one the first responders to one of these pandemics to not have that second bump.

2020.05.03 21:14 TheBonesOfAutumn After stumbling onto a bizarre article in the newspaper archives, I’ve went down quite the rabbit hole and wanted to share my findings with y’all. Here is my in-depth write up about Ted Carr, a serial killer that very few people know about.

On April 20th 1977, around 4:30 A.M., 65-year-old Harriet Carr, who lived at 940 North Olney Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, noticed her garage door was slightly ajar and went to investigate. She entered the garage to find her husband, 62-year-old Melvin “Ted” Carr, dead of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Harriet rushed inside to turn off the still running car, only to discover her husband wasn’t the only one in the garage. In the open trunk of Teds car, Harriet saw three bodies; a woman, a teenage girl, and a very young boy. As Harriet ran screaming from the garage, neighbors called police.
The three bodies found in Teds trunk were identified as 24-year-old Karen Nills, her 2-year-old son Robert, and a 17-year-old girl named Sandra Harris. All three were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, and it was determined that both Karen and Sandra had been sexually assaulted.
Police located a loaded .25 caliber revolver in Teds pocket, and noted Ted was carrying a handkerchief. A vacuum cleaner hose was found leading from the cars tailpipe towards the trunk of the car.
The evidence painted a picture of what had happened.
Ted had abducted the three victims, sexually assaulted the two women, then ordered them into the trunk at gunpoint. He then proceeded to drive his car into the garage, inserted one end of the hose into the tailpipe and the other into the trunk. He closed and locked the trunk and left his victims to die.
Deep scratch marks located on the inside of the trunk told investigators that the two women had fought ferociously in an attempt to escape, breaking their fingernails in the process. Unfortunately their escape attempt was unsuccessful.
When Ted went to confirm his victims were dead, he used the handkerchief to cover his face and opened the trunk. But Teds makeshift mask proved to be no match for the large amount of toxic gas that had filled the trunk and garage, and in a bizarre twist of fate, he succumbed to the fumes himself.
After an autopsy it was concluded that Ted had undiagnosed heart issues that may have made him more susceptible to the fumes.
So who was Ted Carr?
Melvin “Ted” Carr was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1915. In his youth, he was said to be a quiet but good student who made good grades and he rarely got in trouble. Ted spent his summers following his grandpa and dad to work. Over time, he became a very skilled craftsman. But as Ted got older, and after his parents divorced, his personality changed drastically.
According to people who knew Ted, he was “easy on the eyes” and always had a girlfriend, or two. But Ted also had a temper, especially with women.
Teds dad moved to Indiana and bought a small service station, while Teds mom remained in Ohio. Ted stayed with his mother and sister, Virginia, for a short while, but soon got an apartment of his own and a job working as a part time carpenter and painter.
At some point between 1933 and 1942, Ted was married for the first time, but I could find absolutely no information about his first wife.
In 1942 Ted joined the military. While stationed in Virginia he married a woman named Benny French. I couldn’t find any information about their marriage either, other than it didn’t last long. By 1943 the couple was divorced. I did, however, learn that Benny died at age 73 in California.
In 1943 Ted was discharged from the military and returned home to Ohio. He once again used newspaper advertisements to get work as a craftsman. In the same year, Ted was married to his third wife, Harriet, in Ohio.
Harriet was a graduate of Ohio State University. She was a school teacher and also gave private music lessons. She met Ted through a mutual friend, and after only dating for a few months, they were married.
In early 1945 Ted found himself in trouble with the law. A woman named Clara Esser hired Ted to build her a house, but after giving him almost 3,000 dollars and seeing nothing being built, she had him arrested.
In December of 1946 Ted was bound over to a grand jury, and in January of 1947 he was indicted on charges of receiving property under false pretenses. Ted waived his trial by jury and instead his case was presented in front of a judge on May 7th 1947. During the trial it was learned that Ted was on the FBI radar for some time. It was shown that he had been arrested several times for stealing vehicles, carrying concealed weapons, and writing bad checks as far away as San Fransisco.
Finally in June Ted was found guilty. It’s normally customary for the guilty person to remain incarcerated while a full investigation is being conducted, but the judge granted Ted a 2000 dollar bond, and while the investigation continued, Ted was a free man.
Three days after he was found guilty, Ted filed a motion for a new trial. It would take 8 months for a judge to deny his request.
During those eight months, Ted traveled quite extensively, leaving his wife Harriet to care for their home in Ohio. He was known to have traveled to Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Massachusetts, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nebraska.
In October of 1947 Ted was arrested in Kimball, Nebraska after he kidnapped two hitchhikers, a husband and wife named Robert and Betty Carney.
Betty and Robert were hitchhiking in an attempt to get out west. They told police after picking up the pair in Illinois, in a brand new Cadillac that was pulling a trailer, Ted asked them if they would be interested in working for him at a hunting lodge he claimed to own in Idaho. He also told them his name was John Marshall, the same name he used to write bad checks in California years before.
After agreeing to work for him, the couple said things went fine for a few days. Ted bought them food, gave them blankets to sleep with, and chatted with them the entire ride, even telling a joke or two.
Then on the third morning, as they reached a secluded road in Kimball, Nebraska, Teds attitude changed. He suddenly became extremely angry for no reason, and pulled a gun from under his seat. He stopped the vehicle along a secluded road and ordered the couple from the car at gunpoint.
He then proceeded to handcuff Robert to the trailer hitch and violently rape Betty. He struck both Robert and Betty in the face multiple times with the gun, leaving them bleeding and bruised.
Eventually Ted let the couple go and drove away.
The couple flagged down a passing motorist who took them to the police station. The couple explained what happened, and a short time later Ted was arrested for rape and kidnapping.
Believe it or not, Ted was once again granted a bond. He fled the state and headed back home to Ohio.
Finally in February of 1948, the Ohio judge denied Teds request for a new trial. But on the day of his sentencing, Ted requested a continuance for later in February and again for March. The judge agreed. During that month Ted fled Ohio with Harriet and the pair headed for Indiana.
In March of 1948 the Ohio judge who had granted Ted the bond and continuances, decided to seek money from a man named Jack Abrams who had signed Teds 2000 dollar bond. After the state had spent a considerable amount of time and money working on the case against Ted, Jack was charged only 65 dollars, and a warrant was issued for Ted.
After settling down in Indiana, Ted continued to find work as a carpenter and also worked for his dad at his service station. While working at the gas station he met a woman named Lois Williams, who along with her daughter, would later go missing, never to be found.
In February of 1967 it was discovered that Lois Williams, a 35-year-old divorcée, and her 17 year old daughter Karen, had gone missing. Lois’ father had last heard from his daughter and granddaughter in January.
He called police to preform a welfare check. Police noted that Lois’ house was spotless, and nothing appeared to have been taken, not even Lois or Karen’s winter coat, despite the freezing temperatures outside. A missing/endangered persons report was issued.
By the time Lois went missing, she knew Ted Carr well. Ted had met her while working at his dads service station where Lois would frequently take her car for repairs. It was rumored that both Lois and her daughter Karen had a sexual relationship with Ted, though the relationship with Karen was never confirmed.
On the evening Lois was last seen, a neighbor and co-worker of Teds, named Calvin Campbell, witnessed Lois and Karen leave the gas station in Teds car. Hours later, he returned alone and angry, telling the coworker he was mad at Lois who he claimed had went into a bar and refused to come out.
Ted ordered Calvin to close the shop and he did so. The following morning as Calvin was readying for work, Teds dad came across the street yelling that Ted had been beaten up and robbed. Calvin found Ted on the ground, seemingly dazed, incoherent, and bloody. Ted told Calvin a story of how someone had mugged him outside of the service station, but insisted Calvin not call police.
Calvin went inside to check if anything had been stolen from the business. Nothing was missing, but Teds car, the same one he was driving the night before, was on a lift. It had been cleaned with a pressure washer inside and out, with particular focus on the trunk.
Calvin quit his job at the service station after that. Calvins wife, Maurine, believes she was almost a victim of Teds as well. She said one night Ted informed her he was going to the hospital because he was having trouble breathing. Later that night, and while Calvin was working his new night job as a janitor, Ted called her from “the hospital.” He requested she check to see if he had left the garage door open, claiming he was worried he may had left it open and feared for the safety of his tools inside.
Maurine and Calvin had been informed of Teds past and the suspicions that surrounded him by police, so she decided not to go.
It was later discovered that Ted had been at the hospital that evening, but a nurse discovered he had vanished from his room, never bothering to check out, hours before the phone call to Maurine was made. Another neighbor reported seeing his car parked a block away that evening.
Maurine thinks Ted used the landline he had in his garage to call her and believes it was Teds failed attempt at kidnapping her.
Like Maurine, Teds other neighbors found him to be “weird.” They claimed he would often tinker in his garage or do yard work late into the night. One neighbor even claimed he built an entire privacy fence in a single night. They also said they rarely ever saw Harriet, but they would occasionally hear her talking to Ted, who would never respond to her.
Early into the disappearance of Lois and Karen, Police searched Teds garage and found personal papers belonging to Lois in a suitcase, Lois’ watch was also discovered in the garage of the gas station, but no other evidence was discovered and police didn’t believe they had enough to charge Ted with the crime.
In early 1971, Ted was convicted of swindling an elderly blind woman out of her life savings. After giving Ted her power of attorney, he left the handicapped 81-year-old widow with only 30 dollars in her savings account.
Shortly after, he was suspected of forcing a 10 year old girl to commit “an abnormal sex act” under the threat of being raped. He was never charged for this crime.
Later that same year, Ted received five years in jail after he took a 14-year-old girl named Joyce Kinley to Mexico for “immoral” purposes.
Ted had opened a store selling “specialty pottery and ceramics from Mexico.” Teds landlord, a man named Roy Henley, who was also the Kinleys landlord, made the suggestion that Ted take Joyce with him on a trip to Mexico to employ her as his assistant. Her mother, Maurine, agreed and the two spent three weeks in Mexico.
Joyce called her mother daily, telling her Ted was mistreating her, but said he hadn’t attempted to have sex with her. Upon their return, Maurine and Roy demanded Ted give them 500 dollars for them to not report what had happened. Ted agreed and gave them the money.
Shortly after, Maurine signed over her rights of Joyce to Ted, with the promise that Ted would pay for her schooling. It was also suggested by Roy that Ted marry Joyce in Mexico, to prevent any further issues.
Maurine agreed and accompanied Joyce and Ted to Mexico where the ceremony was performed.
Upon their return to the US, Ted was stopped at the border in Texas and questioned about the young girl. He was later arrested and sent back to Indiana where he received his sentence of five years.
Maurine would later testify she had lied about Teds abuse towards Joyce, and was merely in cahoots with Roy to extort money from Ted.
Neither Roy nor Maurine was arrested or charged with any crimes.
While Ted was in prison for the crime, correctional officers discovered several hand drawn maps of the interior of both the elderly woman and the 14-year-old girls homes. The maps also included Teds plans to kill them. He was also reported to put out two “hits” on a detective and an FBI agent.
Ted was released after serving only three of his five year sentence.
After the bodies were discovered in Teds garage, the investigation into Lois and Karen’s disappearance resumed. After a bit of a battle with Teds widow Harriet, police began excavating his yard and his basement and garage floor, where fresh patches of cement were found.
Unfortunately investigators were unable to locate Lois or Karen’s remains. Bones discovered in the backyard turned out to be animal bones, and the investigation stopped.
Some investigators believe they were not allowed an adequate amount of time to fully search the property. Ted was well known as an excellent craftsman, and had completely remodeled his basement shortly after Lois and Karen had disappeared.
Some investigators believe the pairs remains are still inside of the house somewhere, perhaps in a wall.
Lois’ father had believed for quite some time that Ted was responsible for their disappearance. He wrote to Ted while Ted was incarcerated. In the letter he said:
I never did trust you. Those poor girls never did harm to a soul on earth. The suffering for them has passed. They are in Gods heaven. But what about you, Ted Carr? Have you thought about your own death and what lies beyond? I can’t imagine what your punishment will be, can you?
Unfortunately he passed away without ever getting any real closure, as Lois and Karen’s remains have never been found.
The house at 940 North Olney still stands today. I’ve included pictures of it from google street views.
After Teds death, more crimes he had committed came to light.
A 19-year-old woman who had worked for Ted for a short time, told investigators her life had been threatened by him only two weeks prior to Teds death. She said while on a trip to purchase auto parts for Ted, the car she was driving, that belonged to Ted, hit a patch of ice and she wrecked. She sustained minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital.
The woman asked Ted to pay her medical bills as she had been injured on the job. According to the woman, Ted told her he would only pay the bills in exchange for sexual favors. When she denied his request, he became violent, and threatened her by saying, ”If you ever go to the police or tell your attorney, I’ll make sure you never speak again.”
She was only the first person to come forward with claims about Ted. Soon after, more victims emerged with much more horrific stories involving Ted.
A 7-year-old girl identified Ted from his picture in the newspaper as the man who had sodomized her in a park in 1975. He had enticed her into his car and took her to a nearby alley where he sexually assaulted her. He then let her go on the other side of town, where she was found by police.
Three girls from Indiana also named Ted as the man who abducted them from Indianapolis in 1975. The girls were walking to an amusement park on the far side of Indianapolis when they said a man forced them into his car at gunpoint and then took them to a secluded field next to some woods.
The man then cut the throats of the two older girls, ages 13 and 14, and raped the youngest girl, age 11, before stabbing her 15 times in the chest. He left the three for dead in the cornfield and drove away.
The two older girls managed to crawl through the field to the edge of a road where they were spotted by a passing motorist who got help. All three of the girls miraculously survived the attack.
While more victims of Teds came to light, so did an accomplice.
A 20-year-old carnival worker named Charles Crouch from Beech Grove, Indiana was arrested on conspiracy charges after he admitted to investigators that he had attempted to kidnap the three victims that were found in Teds trunk, Karen, Robert, and Sandra.
Charles told police Ted had picked him up while he was hitchhiking in Indianapolis. Ted then offered him money if he would drive Karen and Robert to the Texas/Mexico border where he said he would meet them. Charles agreed, but later Ted told him Karen wouldn’t go willingly, so it was time for a new plan.
Charles said after that the pair attempted to recruit others to stage a break-in at the Nills house with the offer of guns of money. Ted wanted Karen and her son Robert to be tied up, and the house robbed. He also quoted Ted as saying after the job was done, he wanted the robbers ”to leave the apartment and never look back.” However, they were unsuccessful in their attempts to hire someone.
Detectives theorized Ted was planning on entering the apartment after the staged robbery occurred, and killing the three people inside.
Charles said that on the night of April 18th, Ted picked Karen, Robert, and Sandra, up from Karen’s apartment. He said they all arrived at Teds house at 10 P.M. and went into the garage. Charles said they “hung out” and sniffed glue from a paper sack.
Charles said when he left around midnight, Karen was still huffing glue, while Robert slept in the front seat of Teds car, and Sandra was sleeping in the backseat.
When Charles left Teds garage, Ted requested he take a different vehicle of Teds to a tavern and leave it parked there. Charles drove the car to the tavern as instructed and left on foot. The car was found three days after Ted died.
Charles said on the day of the killings he left for Richmond, where he worked as a maintenance man for a different carnival. Upon his return to the carnival in Indiana, a police informant called investigators and told them Charles was back. He was then arrested.
Charles bond was set for 20,000 dollars and he was given a court date. On the day of his sentencing, his charges were dropped from conspiracy to commit murder, to conspiracy to commit a felony. I could find no record of what his sentence ultimately was.
Charles wasn’t the only one police questioned. A short time after Teds death, police brought in one of their own.
Francis Wright, then 45, was a former Marion County Sheriffs Deputy. He was promised immunity in exchange for his testimony regarding Lois Williams disappearance.
Another former deputy claimed that Francis had told him he attempted to borrow money from Ted shortly after Lois Williams and her daughter had disappeared. The other deputy advised him against it.
Francis said while he was “friendly” with Ted, he denied ever asking him for money. He also said he had never seen Lois Williams or her daughter, and knew nothing about their disappearance or if Ted was involved.
Who knows how many more people fell victim to Ted. I highly doubt these crimes were the only ones he was responsible for, they were merely the ones that the newspapers reported. I’ve submitted requests to the Marion County Clerks Office and the Veterans Office for Teds records, in the hopes I’ll learn more. Unfortunately, they told me my request could take up to 6 months, so until then this is all of the information I could find.

FAQ:
  1. What's an agent? - An agent is someone you pay to help you in becoming and being a professional basketball player. Essentially all players have these when they're pros. The significance of it to us is that per NCAA rules, once a player has signed with or given/received money from an agent, they FORFEIT any remaining college eligibility. They are no longer considered amateurs.
  2. What about the new NCAA Rules? - The NCAA has changed the above rule, a little. Players have the option now to retain an agent after the season. The agents can pay for players’ meals, lodging and travel during the negotiation period. The agents also must be certified by the NCAA, and the players have to terminate the relationship if they return to a school. Players can also now return to school after going undrafted without losing eligibility, but only if they participated in the NBA combine. For more info, check these articles by SI and USA Today
  3. A senior has reported signing an agent, what does that mean? - Not a thing for us. Seniors, or players who have played a full 4 years, no longer have any eligibility remaining, so they really don't have a reason to not sign an agent if they play to pursue a career in basketball. Since they can't return to school, their hiring of an agent or leaving for the draft isn't really news, and won't be listed here. This list is only for players making a choice to forgo playing more in college.
  4. I believe you've missed a player, can you add them to the list? - Yep, I'm sure I'll miss some people. Make a comment saying "u/OutlawsHeels - I think you've missed [player]" and I'll add them. Bonus points if you include a reputable source in your post.
  5. A players status has changed, how should I report this? - Same as above, just ping me.
  6. Why are most of these links just links to Jon Rothstein and Evan Daniels on twitter? - I just like & follow both reporters, plus they usually break a lot of news and are the first sources I can find.

Yesterday, Chattanooga and Witchita both went chalk (although 2012 NDSU vs. 2009 Villanova was tight). Will the same hold up today?

Updated Bracket for the /FCS Tournament of Champions, a playoff system intended to definitively* determine the best FCS/1AA team of all time.

*who would argue on the internet?
As you’ve probably noticed, with people stuck at home either sick or going stir crazy, everyone and their uncle has been trying to pick up the slack by running some kind of voting tournament. And over at /FCS, we we’re not about to be the exception!
Since it’s creation, there have been 42 FCS/IAA champions crowned by winning the only real NCAA Division 1 Football Tournament. But who was actually the best of the best? Might as well run another playoff!
Results to-date can be found in the image above and in the tables below. We’ve seeded each year’s winner and divided them up into divisions represented by various FCS/1AA championship game locations. To help make sense of a bracket using just reddit tables, we’ve tried to organize each section in the manner they’d play each other. The winner of the Chattanooga vs Wichita divisions will ultimately play the winner of the Frisco vs Huntington divisions in the Championship.

Voting and Posting Schedule

All voting opens around 8am CST and closes around 7am CST the following day (in an attempt for me to keep on a normal work schedule while at home). In the event of a tie, the following automatic tiebreak will be implemented: if the number of votes for each team is even, the winner will be determined to to the more recent team, and likewise if the number of votes for each team is odd, the tie will go to the older team.
